I mentioned a pastor in another post, of which his name is withheld, that has a video about warning friends and family about Scofield. As I mentioned in another post this pastor teaches that dispensationalism is a huge Biblical heresy, so it is no surprise that he dislikes C I Scofield. For those that may not be familiar with Scofield, he was the editor of the Scofield Study Bible of 1909. Although there is a "New Scofield Study Bible" of 1967, do not confuse it with the 1909 original Scofield Study Bible. Scofield died in 1921, so all the new notes and revisions in the 1967 edition are not the work of Scofield.
I actually agree that a warning needs to be given concerning Scofield, but the warning I would give is not for the same reason that the pastor in the video gives. He thinks dispensationalism is totally wrong, so that is his issue with Scofield. My issue with Scofield, although I recommend his Study Bible, is that he did not go far enough into Biblical dispensationalism. Although Scofield differentiated Israel and the Body of Christ as well as law and grace, he often was guilty of mixing these concepts in his study notes. I would say Scofield was often inconsistent in his dispensationalism. For example, Scofield has a page in his study Bible between Acts and Romans titled, "The Epistles of Paul." Scofield correctly states that the Body of Christ was hid in God (Eph 3:9) and revealed by Paul in his writings. Scofield shows his inconsistency at his note in John 14:3 by making that passage refer to the rapture of the church, while believing the church is not revealed until a few years later when Paul gets saved and writes his epistles. I do not think God would reveal the rapture of the Body of Christ before revealing the Body.
This brings me to a point this pastor makes on this video warning about Scofield futurism. The pastor makes a point that in studying the prophecy of Daniel's seventy weeks that he did not find the rapture. He thinks this strengthens his anti dispensational and anti Scofield futurism positions. I would say to this pastor, "You are correct, neither the Body of Christ nor the rapture of the Body, is found in Daniel." If one believes Ephesians 3:1-9 and Colossians 1:24-26, then he would not expect to find the church or its rapture anywhere in the Old Testament.
I hope this blog post educates all my readers to the fallacious thinking that the Body of Christ or the rapture of the church can be found in the Daniel's 70 weeks or any other Old Testament passage. If you know of the pastor I refer too, then drop his eschatological views like a hot potato. As far as Scofield is concerned take advantage of the dispensational truths found in his study Bible, but strive to go on beyond Scofield in consistently rightly dividing dispensational truth.
